Law Firm Controller

Location: Spring, Texas
Job Type: Full-Time/In Person

Position Overview:
Our mid-sized business law firm is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Controller to manage and oversee the firm’s financial operations. The Controller will be responsible for all aspects of financial reporting, budgeting, billing, collections, and cash management, ensuring the firm’s financial stability and growth. This individual will supervise a small accounting team and work closely with firm leadership to optimize financial performance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Billing & Collections: Oversee and ensure the firm’s billing and collection processes, ensuring accuracy and timeliness. Work collaboratively with attorneys and accounting staff to maximize revenue and optimize collection rates.
  • Financial Reporting: Prepare and analyze monthly and quarterly financial statements and reports for firm leadership. Provide insightful analysis of financial performance, trends, and key performance indicators (KPIs).
  • Budgeting & Forecasting: Develop and manage the firm’s annual budget. Create financial forecasts to support strategic decision-making, resource allocation, and growth initiatives.
  • Productivity Analysis: Generate and distribute weekly productivity reports, monitoring attorney and staff performance against firm objectives and budget targets.
  • Cash & Banking Management: Oversee all online banking activities, including cash flow management, reconciliation of bank accounts, and monitoring of firm accounts to ensure adequate liquidity.
  • Accounts Payable & Vendor Management: Supervise the accounts payable function, ensuring timely and accurate payment processing. Manage vendor relationships and negotiate favorable terms when possible.
  • Team Supervision: Directly manage and oversee an accounts payable bookkeeper, a billing specialist, and a collections specialist. Foster a collaborative and high-performing team environment, providing training and development opportunities as needed.
  • Software & Systems: Maintain expertise in and manage financial operations using Clio and QuickBooks. Ensure accurate and efficient financial record-keeping and reporting.
  • Evaluate and recommend potential improvements to existing systems.
  • Compliance & Best Practices: Ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and accounting best practices related to law firm financial operations, including trust account management.

Qualifications & Skills:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA certification is highly preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a law firm environment in a similar role. Experience managing and mentoring a
    team is essential.
  • Technical Skills: Advanced proficiency in Clio and QuickBooks is required. Strong Excel skills are also essential.
  • Leadership & Communication: Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills. Ability to collaborate effectively with attorneys, staff, clients and stakeholders.
  • Analytical Thinking: Proven financial analysis, forecasting, and problem-solving skills. Ability to interpret financial data and provide actionable recommendations.
  • Attention to Detail: Highly organized with strong attention to accuracy in financial reporting and budgeting.
  • Integrity & Confidentiality: Must demonstrate high ethical standards and the ability to handle sensitive financial information with discretion.
